So I initially thought of doing a product for my company but I honestly had the hardest time picking something that wouldn’t eventually become a swiss army knife. So I switched instead to thoughts of a service that people need. Im not sure where exactly I came up with this idea, it just sort of hit me and I figured I could run with it.

I want to create a service that that provides service animals for part time work. I know that phrasing sounds a little strange but just hear me out. There are lots of people that require a service animal but cant regularly afford to take care of a pet. Or on a different end parents with children who need extra attention but have a hard time helping their child out in certain situations. This business would have certified service animals that could be rented for work. The animals would help people who suffer from social anxiety, seizures, low blood pressure, blindness and plenty of other conditions I cant think of right now. They would be the extra hand some people need.

I haven’t been able to come up with a name for this service yet but I want something that would be comforting and positive. The demographic would be mostly parents, however I could also see a number of young adults using this service as well. The only competitors I could imagine are the companies that train and raise service animals. Ill need to do more research into that but as far as I can tell theres nothing really out there like this. I still need to do a lot more thinking and research into this topic but I want to hear what you guys think so far.

  1. Emett – service animals are an indispensible help to those who rely on them with physical disabilities, or emotional issues that become disabilities. As far as I know, only dogs are used currently. Is that right?

So – having to care for an animal can be wonderful, but sometimes too hard for those who need them. I think that is the issue you are attempting to resolve, with the “part time” aspect.

I’m going to move 100 years into the future now…
What if medical science were to create a new organism specifically for this purpose? What would that organism look like? Would it eat something so ubiquitous that no special food or feeding times would be needed? In fact, little care or maintenance would be needed… so it wouldn’t need to be “part time” – because it would simply, and easily, always be there to help. It could be a clone combination of a number of animals, yet be its own thing.

Is that too weird? I’m seeing all sorts of possible composite opportunities here. The bioscience company would develop these new animals to meet the needs of specific disabilities… wheelchair-bound seniors, military amputees, seeing-impaired, social anxiety sufferers, etc.

I am picturing a blind person dictating to a raccoon with human-like 10 fingers on a computer keyboard…

This is just one example of thinking “BIG”, far into the future (it may not be so far as we think). So – keep thinking, and take this farther into the future… wherever it may lead you.

This sounds like a pretty cool idea! However I personally am not too familiar with house the service animals system works. Whether or not this is a service that goes through your health insurance, or what not. I was wondering if you could fill me in a little more on how the system works now? Or how they go about owning a service dog?

But I do like Coni's take on this on pushing it a little more futuristic and maybe turning this into like a robotic thing that could serve the same purpose but more? I'm not sure, but it's just a thought.

I'm looking forward to seeing this expand into whatever you create it to be :)
